Spring or Winter?

Is it spring or winter? The robins have returned, the flowers are popping up out of the ground, the grass will soon be in need of mowing, the calendar says it's spring but alas the weather does not.
March 13th

March 22

This last picture is what I woke up to this morning. Thank goodness it has all melted now. Their has been more than these 2 days this month that I have awakened and looked out the window and saw snow instead of "popcorn popping on the apricot tree".
Their is a good side of this nasty weather. I'm doing things that I haven't been able to do in awhile like blogging. So it could be a "good thing" with the right attitude.

Me and Mae twins. What?

I was adding and organizing my photos into different albums and came across me when I was a little girl. I didn't realize how much Mae looked liked me. See for yourself.

She's pretty cute if I do say so myself.

How Do You Offset Negative Influences In Your Life?

I gave a talk in the YSA Branch this last Sunday on this topic. I write out my talk and as I give it in Sacrament Meeting I add more personal things as I feel the Spirit directs. So this is the written version but not exactly as I gave it.

How Do I Offset Negative Influences in My Life?
Talk given by Linda on March 18th, 2012
 YSA Branch

A worker was leaning far out over the edge of a high building in the middle of a crowded city. Unfortunately, he slipped and fell. Fortunately, there was a hay wagon proceeding slowly down the avenue just below him. Unfortunately, there was a pitch fork sticking, prongs up, in the middle of the load of hay. Fortunately, the man didn’t hit the pitchfork. Unfortunately he didn’t hit the hay wagon either.
Do you ever feel something like that? You’re going to school, working, living life and things seem to be going fine then “bam” something happens and you feel like your falling. Then after a bit you level again and “bam” negative influences slam at you again. It’s feels like a roller coaster. Up, down, up, down.
We chose to come to earth and receive a body. Which was an excellent choice by the way. By choosing to come to earth we knew that good and bad would be presented to us as we as we went along our earth’s journey. 2 Nephi 2:16 “Wherefore, the Lord God gave unto man that he should act for himself. Wherefore, man could not act for himself save it should be that he was enticed by the one or the other.”
I googled “How do I offset negative influences in my life and lots of different site links came up from… negative influences of drugs, alcohol, advertising, caffeine, people you surround yourself with, your friends, work atmosphere, television, music, media in general, divorce. As you heard this list I just read I can tell you that you have heard similar list before. What rings familiar here? Simply…Satan wants us to fail so you and I are being attacked. There is a war. We know the final outcome for God’s kingdom in this war. It will be victorious. What about each of us individually? Will we be victors?
“He who stands in the middle of the road is in a dangerous position; he gets knocked down by the traffic from both sides.” Matthew 6:24 “ No Man can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one, and love the other; Or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” We have a choice.
In Family Home Evening a few weeks ago you were given a new For the Strength of Youth book. I believe that no matter what our age is when it comes to the gospel principals taught in this book it is beneficial to us. By being obedient to these principals we will be standing in holy places. We will have the spirit with us to help guide us in the choices and decisions we make. Remember the google list I shared earlier? 1 Corinthians
10:13 “There hath no temptation take you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” Heavenly Father has given us ways to escape. I’m just going to share a few with you.
For the Strength of Youth- pg. 2 Agency and Accountability- 2 Nephi 2:27 – “Wherefore men, …are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death.”   Heavenly Father had given you agency, the ability to choose right from wrong and to act for yourself. Next to the bestowal of life itself, the right to direct your life is one of God’s greatest gifts to you. While here on earth you are being proven to see if you will use your agency to show your love for God by keeping His commandments.

Pg. # 11 Entertainment and the Media-Article Faith #13- If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy we seek after these things-  Choose wisely when using the media, because whatever you read, listen to, or look at has an effect on you. Select only media that uplifts you.
Pg. #16 Friends – Everyone needs good and true friends. They will influence how you think and act, and even help you determine the person you will become.
Pg. #25 Physical and Emotional health-  Doctrine and Covenants 89:18-19 – All saints who remember to keep and do these sayings…shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones; and shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge. – Your body is a temple, a gift from God. Choose to obey the Word of Wisdom. When you are obedient to this law you remain free from harmful addictions and have control over your life.
We cannot sit idly by and hope that nothing negative will come our way. We must take action. Leonardo da Vinci said, “I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do.”
We must be actively alert in fighting for the light in choosing the right. I have a scripture chain I’d like to share that would help you in keeping the commandments.
Matthew 4:1-4 “ Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights he was afterward an hungred. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones by made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God,” So ‘Live God’s word’
Alma 13:28 “But that ye would humble yourselves before the lord, and call on his holy name, and watch and pray continually, that ye may not be tempted above that which ye can bear, and thus be led by the Holy Spirit, becoming humble, meek, submissive, patient, full of love and all long-suffering:” –  ‘Watch and Pray’
1 Corinthians 10:13 “There hath no temptation take you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” ‘Escape temptation’
Doctrine and Covenants 10:5 Pray always, that you may come off conqueror; yea, that you may conquer Satan and that you may escape the hands of the servants of Satan that do uphold his work.” ‘ Pray always’
3 Nephi 18:15-18 “ Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him. And as I have prayed among you even so shall ye pray in my church, among my people who do repent and are baptized in my name. Behold I am the light; I have set an example for you. And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto his disciples, he turned again unto the multitude and said unto them: Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.” ‘Watch and Pray always’
Genesis 39:8,9,12 “But he refused, and said unto his master's wife, Behold, my master wotteth not what is with me in the house, and he hath committed all that he hath to my hand; There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God? And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out. ‘Refuse and Run’
I can’t promise you that everything in your life will be wonderful all the time. It won’t we live in an imperfect world. But I can promise that as you steer clear of the negative influences in your life you will be blessed in this life and especially the next.
I’m so thankful to be serving with Larry amongst you. I have become a better person for knowing each of you. The gospel of Jesus Christ is God’s true church on this earth. I know the prophet Joseph Smith was God’s instrument in restoring the gospel in these Latter Days. President Monson in the prophet today. Your Branch President loves and cares for each of you. I see it. You’re in our prayers. I love you. We love you.
Heleman 5:12 “And now, my sons, ( my YSA’s) remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.”
I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

LaVerne's birthday

Larry and I had the privilege of taking Larry's dad and mom out for Grandpa's 79th birthday. We took them for a taste of Hawaii. Tikki Teriyaki. It's mine and Larry's favorite restaurant in town. He's looking pretty good!
Happy Birthday Grandpa!

Free Range Chickens Oh My

Larry put gates on both sides of our goat and chicken yard. In the bottom of the gates he put in little chicken doors so the chickens could go in and out of their yard and save us money on chicken food. Humans and fowl both benefit from this arrangement. Of course the goats tried to get out too.

I took some pictures of the happy chickens out exploring and eating all those icky bugs.

Doodle Doo was checking to see if I had any bread to feed him. He is the nicest of our two roosters.

I want to start selling some of their eggs to help pay for their food. No sales yet. I'll keep spreading the word. 21 hens and 2 roosters eat a lot.

I Close My Eyes and All I See are Tree Branches

You know how when you go ice skating or roller skating and when you are done it still feels like you are skating. That sensation also happens to me when I do something for a long time and close my eyes I see whatever it was I was doing. Which a couple of weeks ago happened to be trees, lots and lots of trees. Every year it has to be done. I was waiting for Larry to do it but he had been so busy doing other things that I started and then like the energizer bunny kept on going. It took me 5 days to trim 20 fruit trees and 3 ornamental trees.
But it is done and they are budding out as we speak.

I literally climb up into the trees because it's easier for me to reach most of the branches. I found a couple of birds nest. I should have marked the trees so I could see if the birds returned this year to lay eggs.

Larry likes to trim with the chain saw. So he came through after me and sawed off a few branches and then trimmed the 3 cherry trees with the chain saw. He had to clean them up after a bear last year got into one of the trees and twisted and broke some branches. Hopefully the bears will stay away since our chickens are free range chickens now.

Aria and her American Girl doll

For Aria's birthday in December I knitted her doll an outfit. A top, skirt and hat. Aria liked it and so that made me happy. Isn't Aria adorable! Love her!

Bannister (February)

The very top banister used to be a place where the mom's would cringe when their children walked up to the third level but no more. Larry added a pole between each one. Exciting!

Larry's 55th birthday and a Valentine Dance (February)

The Valentine dance just happened to fall on Larry's 55th birthday. An official senior citizen in some places. Give us those discounts! Just got to remember to ask...

Some of our Young Single Adults from the branch were there and they sang Happy Birthday to Larry.
Cody, Llisa, Ariel, Justin and Vickie.
Love them.

Everyone else has scary eyes but I look good, so I posted it anyway.

A kiss for a kiss. Sure why not.

Happy Birthday Larry and I love you!

Ainsley's 2!!! (February)

Ainsley's birthday was just a couple days after the sealing and so since most of the family was in town April had a birthday party for her over at their house. Family, pizza and cake. Doesn't get much better than that.

She likes the present Papa J and I got her. Zoo animals to go with their zoo playhouse.

Owen taking Ainsley for a ride on her new scooter.

Ethan taking Misty's place. Being the photographer. Doing such a nice job too.

Getting some loves from the grand kids that were willing at the moment.
Me and Hyrum.

Me and Owen.

Me and Ainsley.

All Eleven grandchildren. Aren't the best looking, greatest kids!

Eleven that is until May when #12 gets here.

Matt, April, Jovie, Ainsley and Asher is a Forever Family (February)

A beautiful family! The day that has been talked about since Matt got baptized a little over a year ago finally arrived. The day to be sealed! The ordinance that makes your family a forever family. A family even in the next life. They all look beautiful in white.

I'm grateful for the family that came to support them in this. I love you all!!!
Misty has a picture of ALL the family that was there that I need to get to add to this post.

We missed those who couldn't be there and Nathan who is there but who knows where?
We went out to eat afterwards. We all can't fit around one table anymore.

Hyrum is happy he gets to eat soon.

Some more family.

What a cutie! He is having fun with Grandma J.

Chopsticks make good ear cleaners.

Or drums.

My three little triplet granddaughters. Even if they don't have the same mom. Close enough. Hehe.

When we were done at the restaurant we drove home and partied some more at our house. We had Banana Splits and played games. A long but good day.

Courtesy of the Young Single Adults Elder's Quorum (February)

The Young Single Adults Relief Society from the Branch spent the night here. Lo and behold we should not have let the guys in the Branch know. At least 3 of the guys anyway. I was going outside at midnight to get wood to put in the fire and look what I found on the back porch? I thought it was sweet. Who doesn't love to receive chocolate? Not many.

Then the girls went outside and this wasn't so sweet.

Our cars were wrapped in saran wrap. I have to thankfully say that the boys did not put Vaseline on my door handles for which I am grateful but oh the poor girls.
And they were wrote on.

The guys got their justice. The car they came in wouldn't start so after a long time they finally called one of the girls staying here and borrowed her car to go home in. Caught...
When I was opening the blinds in the morning I found more writing on my windows. Good thing Larry can wash windows quickly.

The ladies made some beautiful necklaces while they were here.

Gold Mining 101 (February)

Larry found my mom's old gold mining pan that she used for a cub scout day camp years ago. He has been watching some gold mining show that is shot in Alaska so he was in the mood to go panning.

He found some!

Not! Stay away gold seekers. The gold mining kit had a few specks of gold that he put in the water to practice panning for. Dreams...
Their may not be gold but their is fish for the Blue Heron.

Jessie and Basketball (February)

April, Jovie, Ainsley and I drove to watch Jessie play in a basketball game. She is on the Varsity for her 7th grade team. She is a hustler on the court. It was fun to watch her. Go Jessie! She is dribbling the ball with the 14 on her jersey.

Jovie and Ethan were SO excited to see each other. Cousin love!

After awhile the basketball game becomes uninteresting for little ones so Jovie decided to style Uncle Joshua's hair.

Patient Josh.

Way to go Jess! Looking good!
